Belong was first established in 2000 with the arrival of the dispersal policy of the government at that time. This meant that asylum seekers were being sent to areas where there was little to no support for them. The founding members of Belong recognised the need for a support system and established a small weekly meeting to discuss and address issues that were arising. Belong has grown from that small group (originally known as Heri Kwetu) to a full time service with its own building. Whilst originally serving only African asylum seekers and refugees, we now support all new-arrivals regardless of immigration status. However, we have always served the same purpose, to support and promote the integration of migrants.
